ABB wins 16 MEUR synchronous motor order for an irrigation project in India

2009-12-23 - Energy efficient motors to provide local farmers with much-needed water

Helsinki, Finland, December 23, 2009 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will deliver 22,5 MW synchronous motors to the Andhra Pradesh state in India. This delivery is part of a big irrigation project in which water is pumped 300 km from a low-lying river to a reservoir on higher ground. From there the water is released and flows by gravity into a network of canals or channels to irrigate the surrounding fields.

The energy efficiency of the pumping process is ensured by high efficiency motors combined with ABB frequency converters which also guarantee soft-starting of the motors without unnecessary load to the network.

“ABB s wide product range and knowhow is a tremendous strength, which helped us to win this order. The need of irrigation systems will grow in the future and ABB will play an active role on this global market”, says Jouko Tuuri, Vice President, Synchronous motors, Helsinki Finland.

ABB has previously delivered power and automation technologies for numerous irrigation projects in other Andhra Pradesh areas which is known as the most agriculturally productive regions in India. During the dry season almost half of the area is depending on irrigation. When the projects are finalized an area of almost 3,200 square kilometres will be within the reach of irrigation.

The motors will be manufactured by ABB factory in Helsinki, Finland with deliveries end of 2011.
